Square or Round Tin Lining Tutorial

Hi there! While Hayley is overseas, I figured I might post the tin lining tutorial we have. We aren't proclaiming that this is a perfect, flawless method, however it does help in smoother cakes and ease of removing cakes from the tins.

So I hope it's easy to understand!

Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes!

Apologies for the long awaited update!
On the 22nd of June, our family had a joint birthday party for my cousin Katie and my Mum. Becca and I made cupcakes, baked in ice cream cones and decorated to look like ice creams, for Katie.

Tutorials Related to Cakes?

Hi! It's Bec here. Hayley and I haven't been doing much with cakes at the moment, but we do hope to pick things up when my little sister's birthday comes around - I've offered to make her cake!

My idea for that would be "Fake Ice-cream Cone" cupcakes, topped with a vanilla buttercream, with a flake in the side. Maybe sprinkles. I'm hoping some will be completely plain (No colours, or preservatives for my colour/preservative intolerant sister) and then some other flavours and colours.

I really hope Hayley and I can pull it off.

Alright, so the main point of the post - tutorials. Hayley and I have planned to sometimes do small tutorials. We won't promise professional results - we are only amateurs at this point! The tutorials will mainly be things that we have learned and felt like a light bulb moment for us.

This will help, I suppose, busy up our blog rather than it sit here waiting for us to make cakes. Even practise runs could be posted.

The first tutorial I hope to post is about lining square/circle tins. I'll even research how to line oddly shaped tins. (Should be the same method as the circle tin.) I'm thinking about providing two different ways of lining - perfectionist (Hayley's area!) and/or everyday baking.

Not sure yet, but it might just be worth it. :)

Lego Cakes!

My cousin James had his 17th birthday earlier this month, and as a surprise, Becca and I decided to make him mini Lego cakes! The idea was taken from a post over on Pinterest (I don't have the link but I'm sure Becca does), but we took a slightly different approach.

The original poster had only covered the tops of the cakes with coloured icing; we decided to go a step further and cover the entire cakes with coloured fondant! While the colours didn't turn out as dark as actual Lego blocks, we still achieved what we sought after and even James knew what they were without us telling him!

It took us ages to finish them, and of course, being a perfectionist, I took longer than Becca did to do each cake. While they aren't perfect squares or rectangles, they still looked like the Lego blocks we aimed to create.
